Burdur: a quaint Anatolian city with thousands of years of history, pristine natural landscapes, and a culture as vibrant as its nature. Located in the Lakes District of Türkiye's Western Mediterranean region, Burdur is regarded as the cultural capital of the Teke Region, truly a city of “Lakes, Roses and Hearts.”
LOCATIONS IN BURDUR
Burdur has preserved many excellent examples of Ottoman regional architecture, in particular the Taşoda (now the Ethnography Museum), Kocaoda (also known as Çelikbaş) and the Mısırlılar konaks, or mansions, dating back to the 17th century. Their interior and exterior decor displays a classically Ottoman aesthetic. The Burdur Archaeological Museum houses some very important artifacts from across the region.
Burdur Lake, with its inviting swimming beaches, is a superb location for water sports. Climbing to the top of Susamlık Hill gives you a panoramic view of the city and lake.
The İnsuyu Cave, 10 kilometers south on the road to Antalya, is over half a kilometer deep with nine distinct pools and several chambers filled with stalactites and stalagmites.
At Gölhisar (Cibyra), 100 kilometers southwest of Burdur, lie the ruins of an important ancient northern Lycian city dating back to Roman times, replete with a stadium, a lower and upper agora, a theater, a necropolis, and large aqueducts.
Lake Salda is an inviting shooting location with beaches reminiscent of the Maldives and Martian-like landscapes. With rock formations and sandy dunes that share the same characteristics as those found on Mars, Lake Salda is deemed to be one of the two places in the world that features such close similarities with Martian geology.
Also in the region is Hacılar Höyük, where an excavation in the 1950s found ceramics dating back to between 8500 and 5400 BCE. The ancient site of Sagalassos lies 33 kilometers east of Burdur and 7 kilometers south of the town of Ağlasun. Once the Pisidian capital, Sagalassos has ruins from Roman times including a memorial entrance gate, a colonnaded street, lower and upper agoras, a temple and a magnificent theater.
TRANSPORTATION
Burdur is located at the crossroads where routes from Marmara, the Aegean, and Central Anatolia reach the Mediterranean. The Isparta Süleyman Demirel Airport, located 25 kilometers away, is the primary airport.
